AMC consistently features some of the most newsworthy personalities of our times who are all eager to reach the senior-most executives, editors, and influencers in our industry. We knew our political guests were notable in 2005 and 2006 when Senator John McCain and Senator Barack Obama addressed us. Little did we realize then that by 2008, the two politicians would be locked in a grueling battle for the highest political office in the land. 

In 2005, “Town Hall with Senator John McCain” featured the now GOP presidential hopeful in a Q&A with Newsweek’s Assistant Managing Editor Evan Thomas. During the morning session, McCain offered his thoughts on the Iraq war, the likelihood he would raise taxes if elected president, and (in response to the question of if he was seeking the title of Commander in Chief) the quote, “I want to be President…but I’d also like to be emperor.” McCain showed an even more informal side shooting craps alongside conference attendees for several hours at the casino in the El Conquistador Hotel.

AMC 2006: New Yorker Editor-in-Chief David Remnick interviewed Senator Barack Obama at the conclusion of a standing-room-only AMC lunch.
On October 23, 2006, one day after revealing on Meet the Press that he was considering a run for the White House, Senator Barack Obama sat down with New Yorker Editor-in-Chief David Remnick. Far from a light-hearted chat, the lunch session in the main ballroom at the famed Arizona Biltmore Hotel featured Remnick pressing Obama on issues of religion, the Bush administration’s failings, and his admission of drug use in his book, The Audacity of Hope. “I inhaled—that was the point,” the Senator told Remnick.
