Letter from the AMC Conference Chair
How lucky we are to lead an industry thats thriving in the most competitive era in the history of American media. Magazines matter more than ever, giving readers and advertisers plenty of reasons to dive in and turn the page and yet given the challenges we face, from the advent of disruptive technologies to demands on the time of our most loyal customers, we cannot sit back and rest on our record of success. Fresh and innovative thinking about ongoing issues we know too well and some were encountering for the first time is necessary to keep us on top.
The theme of this years American Magazine Conference, The Future of Magazines, anticipates the need to develop creative solutions with a program of panels and speakers that lead the way to a prosperous future. Among the highlights:
Wal-Mart CEO Lee Scott on the new retail and distribution landscape for magazinesMedia icon Martha Stewart and Susan Lyne, CEO of Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, on brand building and rebuildingU.S. Senator John McCain on his secrets for effective leadershipLunch with Matt Cooper, White House CorrespondentPatti Stonesifer, the head of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, on doing well by doing goodSirius CEO Mel Karmazin on what magazine makers can learn from the fast growth of satellite radioA discussion on the publics love-hate relationship with the media, moderated by Michael Kinsley of the Los Angeles TimesVenerable adman and art director George Lois on creating covers to win the newsstand wars Former Univision president and San Antonio mayor Henry Cisneros on marketing to the emerging Hispanic audience
