Membership

Senior editors, art directors and photography editors employed by qualified publications are eligible to join ASME. Qualified publications include consumer and business magazines edited and published in the United States, including digital-only publications. Editors of the following are not qualified for membership: company publications intended primarily for and distributed solely to employees and their associates or customers; print or digital newsletters; newspaper websites and websites modeled on newspapers; and marketing and promotional websites.

There are four categories of ASME membership: Chief Editor, Editor, Retired Editor and ASME NEXT. Chief Editors are entitled to all the privileges of ASME membership. Editors and Retired Editors are entitled to all the privileges of ASME membership except that they are not eligible for ASME-member discounts on entry fees for the National Magazine Awards and the ASME Best Cover Contest, nor are their subordinates eligible for discounts on registration fees for ASME programs. ASME NEXT members are nonvoting members of ASME. Applications for Editor and ASME NEXT membership must be endorsed by a chief editor and are subject to the approval of the ASME Board of Directors.

CHIEF EDITOR Members are editorial directors of publishing companies or divisions or chief editors of print magazines, magazine websites and digital-only publications. Please see the application form for dues information. Dues are billed in May following the ASME Annual Meeting; dues for members joining at other times of the year are prorated. 
 
 

 

EDITOR Members are senior-level editors, art directors and photography editors; editorial consultants and free-lance editors, graphic designers and photography editors regularly employed by qualified publications; and journalism educators. Chief editors of not-for-profit publications are eligible to join as Editor members but as such are not eligible for ASME-member discounts on entry fees for the National Magazine Awards and the ASME Best Cover Contest, nor are their subordinates eligible for discounts on registration fees for ASME programs. Please see the application form for dues information. Dues are billed in May following the ASME Annual Meeting; dues for members joining at other times of the year are prorated.

ASME NEXT Members are junior-level editorial staff members with no more than seven years of editorial experience. ASME NEXT titles include Editorial Assistant, Assistant Editor, Associate Editor, Online Editor and Web Producer and corresponding titles in design and photography departments. ASME NEXT members are nonvoting members of ASME. Please see the application form for dues information. RETIRED Members are former chief editors and senior-level editors, art directors and photography editors who wish to continue their support of ASME programs, including the National Magazine Awards, and receive the ASME Membership Directory and Handbook and other ASME publications.
