New York, NY (June 1, 2009)—The American Society of Magazine Editors (ASME) is running a competition to determine the top consumer magazine covers from July 2008 through June 2009, to be hosted on Amazon.com. This is the third year that ASME has organized the contest and the first it has worked with Amazon.com. Also for the first time ever, visitors to the Amazon.com website will vote on the nominated covers in 10 categories.
“We wanted consumers to have a voice in determining the year’s best covers because our editors and designers shape and choose their covers with the reader in mind,” said Sid Holt, Chief Executive of ASME. “As one of the leading online retailers of consumer magazines, Amazon is a natural fit for hosting this competition. The company’s customers clearly enjoy the medium of print, and the magazine industry is thrilled to have an opportunity to develop a more interactive and meaningful relationship with Amazon’s users.”
“Amazon customers are never shy about voicing their opinions,” said Peter Larsen, Director, Magazines at Amazon. “We’re excited to work with ASME to help determine the best covers of the past year.”
Beginning June 1, consumer magazines in the United States will be invited to submit covers in one or more of the following 10 categories: Best Obama cover (featuring President Barack Obama); Best News & Business; Best Entertainment & Celebrity; Best Sports & Fitness; Best Fashion & Beauty; Best Science, Technology & Nature; Best House & Home; Best Lifestyle; Most Delicious cover; and Sexiest cover.
A panel of judges composed of magazine editors, design directors, art directors and photo editors will first select six finalists in each category. Those covers will be posted on www.amazon.com and visitors will have a chance to vote in each category. When the category winners are determined, the covers will be showcased on www.amazon.com, where visitors can then vote for cover of the year.
Each participating cover displayed on www.amazon.com will include the issue date, name of the photographer or illustrator, a brief description of the cover and why it was nominated. At the bottom of the description, a tab will enable consumers to subscribe to the magazine.
Consumer voting will begin September 1. The winning magazine covers will be announced at the magazine industry’s first-ever Magazine Innovation Summit, October 14, at the Grand Hyatt New York in New York City.
