SUMMARY

The Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing seeks bids from an individual or firm to provide editing services to produce the organization’s quarterly magazine, Volta Voices. The term of contract is January, 2018-January, 2019 and is renewable each year upon agreement by both parties.

The schedule (subject to change) for the RFP is:

Due date for questions: November 1, 2017
RFP submissions due: November 5, 2017
Finalists to be notified: November 15, 2017
Interviews conducted: End of November, 2017
Notify selected candidate: December, 2017
Contract begins: January, 2018

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

The Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing helps families, health care providers and education professionals understand childhood hearing loss and the importance of early diagnosis and intervention. Through advocacy, education, research and financial aid, AG Bell helps to ensure that every child and adult with hearing loss has the opportunity to listen, talk and thrive in mainstream society. It is headquartered at the historic Volta Bureau in Georgetown, Washington, D.C.

MAGAZINE SUMMARY

Volta Voices is an award-winning quarterly print and online magazine covering a variety of topics, including hearing aids and cochlear implants, early intervention and education, professional guidance, legislative updates and perspectives from individuals from across the United States and around the world.

EDITOR JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Serve as contract editor for Volta Voices, which includes research, writing/editing, and collaboration with designers and photographers
  • Develop story ideas and pitches
  • Assist in coordinating reference/source material, author biographies, and photos
  • Write/rewrite and edit content for target audiences with a focus on audience engagement using the AG Bell style guide and editorial requirements
  • Copyediting and proofreading services

Contract Editor reports to the Communications Director

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree, preferably in journalism, communications, English, marketing, other related discipline, and at least five years of experience in editorial planning and production
  • AP Style proficiency
  • Experience developing/producing content for print publications
  • Experience pitching stories
  • Ability to meet strict editorial deadlines
  • Experience working with graphic design vendors
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills
  • Basic knowledge of image file formats and editing principles is essential
  • Graphic design experience a plus
