NATIONAL MAGAZINE AWARDS 2010

Any magazine edited in the United States and published in print or online is eligible to enter the National Magazine Awards, subject to the following conditions:

• A print magazine must have been published at least four times during 2009 and must still be in existence at the end of the year (a magazine that is discontinued after completing its publication schedule for 2009 is nonetheless eligible to enter the 2010 National Magazine Awards).
  
• A magazine website or online-only magazine must have been launched before November 1, 2009, and must be able to show that the site is still active at the end of the year.
  
• The primary purpose of an online-only magazine must be to inform and entertain. An online-only magazine must include a significant amount of original content presented in a variety of textual and visual forms, such as news stories, feature stories and essays as well as graphics and photographs. Content is usually created by multiple contributors, supervised by one or more editors or producers and is frequently supplemented or replaced by new content. Personal or group blogs are eligible to enter the National Magazine Awards if they include a significant amount of original content and adhere to the commonly accepted standards of journalism articulated in the Code of Ethics of the American Society of Magazine Editors.
  
• The following are not eligible to enter the National Magazine Awards: company publications intended primarily for and distributed solely to employees and their associates or customers; print or digital newsletters; magazines published in languages other than English; newspaper websites and websites modeled on newspapers; and marketing and promotional websites.
  
• The administrators of the National Magazine Awards reserve the right to determine if a print or digital publication qualifies for entry.

The following conditions also apply:

• Excerpts serialized from nonfiction books are not eligible except as parts of an entry in the following categories: Magazine of the Year; General Excellence (Print and Digital Media); Design (Print and Digital Media); Photography (Print and Digital Media); Mobile Media; and Community.
  
• Short fiction newly translated into English may be entered in Fiction even if the translation has or will soon be published in book form.
  
• Special sections or special issues of print magazines are eligible only if they were distributed to the full and customary list of subscribers and newsstands.
  
• Any or all entries of a magazine or website found to be in violation of the ASME Guidelines for Editors and Publishers or ASME Best Practices for Digital Media may be disqualified from the National Magazine Awards without notice to the editors of the publication.
  
• Entry fees will not be refunded under any circumstances, including voluntary withdrawal from the awards.

The administrators of the National Magazine Awards reserve the right to withhold awards in any category in which the judges determine that the entries fall below the standard of excellence set by the Board of Directors of the American Society of Magazine Editors.
