Lifetime Achievement Awards
 
The magazine community celebrated the lifelong achievements of two publishing legends—Tina Brown, renowned journalist and former Editor of The New Yorker and Vanity Fair, and Jack Kliger, former MPA Chairman and outgoing President and CEO of Hachette Filipacchi Media, U.S.—at the Lifetime Achievement Awards ceremony in January. Brown was inducted into ASME’s Magazine Editors’ Hall of Fame, while Kliger was presented MPA’s Henry Johnson Fisher Award.

Magazines 24/7 Digital Conference

Magazines 24/7 “Building Audiences, Building Brands,” held in February at New World Stages in New York City, was the fourth annual digital summit from MPA. The conference routinely brings together a stellar lineup of thought leaders, digital pioneers, Internet and mobile executives, journalists, and representatives from all sides of the magazine business. For the first time, Magazines 24/7 boasted a second day of programming, with sessions devoted to legislative and regulatory issues within the digital sector.

Career Insight Conference

Several of the most talented business executives and scribes in the magazine industry gathered at MPA’s second “Find Yourself in Magazines: Career Insight Conference" to expose hundreds of potential magazine employees to opportunities in the business. The event was held in March at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in New York City.

Retail Conference

Featured speakers included Yankelovich’s J. Walker Smith, who talked about today’s consumers, and Wendy Liebmann of WSL Strategic Retail (above right), who was interviewed by Glamour editor Cindi Leive (above left) about how America shops.

Washington Day 2008

More than half a dozen leading Washington, D.C. lawmakers, including the Representative Rahm Emanuel (D-IL), addressed the MPA Board of Directors and Government Affairs Council at an all day meeting in April, at the Capitol View Business and Conference Center in Washington, DC. Discussion topics included First Amendment rights, privacy, pharmaceutical advertising, reporters’ shield, and more.

National Magazine Awards

ASME’s 43rd National Magazine Awards was held in May at Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York City. The star-studded event drew celebrities such as model, author and “Top Chef” host Padma Lakshmi, “30 Rock” castmates, CNN’s Anderson Cooper, ad legend George Lois, and acclaimed photographer Mary Ellen Mark.

MPA-IMAG Leadership Conference

Close to 100 representatives of the independent magazine community gathered for the fifth annual IMAG Conference for Independent Publishers, held in May at the Hotel Orrington in Evanston, IL. For the first time, Utne Reader's Independent Press Awards was integrated into the IMAG Conference program.

Kelly Awards

For the second year, MPA’s Kelly Awards for outstanding magazine advertising campaigns were handed out via a virtual ceremony on a microsite. The portal also featured an interactive gallery showcasing the Kelly winner and finalist campaigns as well as dozens of “inspiration” videos from both ad creative teams and Kelly Award judges.

Mentor of the Year Award Breakfast

MPA’s Magazine Mentor of the Year Award celebrates the best candidate who challenges all within his or her sphere of influence to create meaningful change and positive social impact within the magazine industry and beyond. The 2008 award was presented to Kevin Martinez, Associate Publisher, Harper's BAZAAR, at a special event in June, at the Harmonie Club in New York City.

Magazines 24/7: Video

The June confab was held in the Luce Room at the Time Life Building in New York City, and featured speakers such as award-winning broadcaster Tammy Haddad, web video consultant to Newsweek.com, the hosts of the daily, three-minute webcast “Political Lunch” (above), and eMarketer’s David Hallerman.

Mix & Mingle

MPA hosted its fourth “Making Connections in Magazines” Mix & Mingle, which took place at New York City’s Bryant Park Grill in June. The relaxed atmosphere provides attendees with a comfortable after-work platform to network with each other. Over 350 magazine, advertising, digital and other media professionals attended, making the 2008 Mix and Mingle a prime opportunity to celebrate diversity.

The premiere conference for consumer magazine leadership included keynote presentation from Dreamworks’ Jeffrey Katzenberg, Tom Rogers from TiVo, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, as well as Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (above).

The magazine industry’s ad sales and marketing forces came together for MPA's Magazine Coalition Rally, held in November at the Time & Life Building in New York City. Magazine leaders shared insights, new research and advertising case studies to help publishers grow business in the face of today's challenges.
