TIME.com broke news stories throughout the year and users in 2006 were up 90% year-over-year.

2nd Place:         BusinessWeek.com

At BusinessWeek Online, users find eight channels replete with trusted information and resources to help manage their personal and professional lives.

3rd Place (tie):   Forbes.com

Forbes.com reaches the largest number of C-level executives -- its target audience -- of any business site on the web, and has expanded the editorial reach of the company four-fold.


Technology Review
Updated daily, TechnologyReview.com provides ahead-of-the-curve coverage on what's next in technology and business.

 

Fashion


Winner:            
InStyle.com

This site allows users to see their favorite stars on the red carpet, learn who designed their outfits and then browse for details and click-to-buy on hundreds of trendsetting clothing items and accessories that were featured.

2nd Place:         Brides.com

Aggregating the content from Brides, Modern Bride and Elegant Bride, Brides.com provides the bride-to-be with one site where she can gather ideas, get planning advice, share tips with other brides in the online community, access a variety of wedding planning tools, and get valuable local resources.

3rd Place:          Style.com

The online home of Vogue and W, Style.com combines appropriate material drawn from its source titles with high-quality original content that is specifically written and designed for the web.

 

Entertainment/Celebrity

 

Winner:             EW.com

Every day, Entertainment Weekly's online portal features 20 original online-only pieces of content including interviews, columns, photos, blogs item and video.

 

2nd Place:         People.com

With up-to-the-minute updates, People.com contains over 95% original content. In 2006 they broke some of the biggest celebrity news stories of the year.

 

3rd Place:          TVGuide.com

The redesigned TVGuide.com has over 65 editor-written blogs, a new user interface, best-in-class entertainment search functionality, robust community features, and a mechanism to personalize the site for each user’s preferences.

 

Sports/Enthusiast

 

Winner:             SI.com

The site brings the DNA of Sports Illustrated to an exciting digital platform.  It features award-winning writers, great photography and video segments featuring some of SI’s most well-known personalities.

 

2nd Place:         PopSci.com

PopSci.com is a daily destination at the intersection of popular culture and technology that inspires a robust community fascinated by what’s new and what’s next.

 

3rd Place:          1UP.com

1UP.com is the central hub of Ziff Davis Game Group’s integrated enthusiast games media strategy. All the magazine editors blog on the site and engage the gaming community in direct conversation.

 

Service/Lifestyle

 

Winner:             nymag.com

Since its redesign a year ago, the site has expanded its original content including “Daily Intelligencer” and “Grub Street” blogs, comprehensive food and restaurant coverage, fashion advice, and interactive games and galleries.

 

2nd Place:         AARP The Magazine Online

Important messages normally delivered in print are now coming to life for users as they personalize and apply information via engaging and powerful interactive tools.

 

3rd Place:          Wine Spectator Online

The website features more than 168,000 wine ratings, tasting reports, news and features, editors' blogs, videos and other original content.

The “Magazine Blog of the Year Category” recognizes creativity, voice, writing style, the use of hyperlinks and multiple voices to encourage a conversation.

 

Winner:             PCMag.com “Gearlog”

Within “Gearlog,” PC Magazine editors interact directly with readers and initiate conversation by sharing the latest news, reviews and commentary.

 

2nd Place (tie):  FineWoodworking.com “Glue Tube”

                        Seed Science Blogs “Frontal Cortex”

The "Frontal Cortex" is a blog written by Jonah Lehrer, the Editor-at-Large for Seed. Science Blogs is a community of like-minded individuals who are passionate about science and its place in contemporary culture.

 

Time Out New York “The TONY Blog”

The TONY blog offers readers daily access to editors' meanderings about town in a conversational, off-the-cuff forum.

 

                        Wine Spectator “James Suckling”

Launched in March 2006 with Senior Editor James Suckling blogging about the 2005 Bordeaux Barrel Tastings, it regularly includes updated entries plus guest bloggers, including well-known winemakers, chefs and sommeliers.

2nd Place:         Technology Review “Telescope Series”

The micro-documentaries "Telescope Series" are 4-7 minutes in length and provide behind-the-scenes coverage on how technologies are created and implemented.

 

3rd Place:          Forbes.com “Street Talk” Series

Hosted by Forbes National Editor Bob Lenzner, "StreetTalk" helps investors and businesses stay in touch with what's important by featuring in-depth interviews with newsmakers and money managers.

The “Best Podcast or Podcast Series” category recognizes creativity and content in online audio.

 

Winner:             National Geographic Traveler “Walks of a Lifetime” Series

The series is narrated by radio and TV travel authority Rudy Max.  It debuted last summer and was ranked the #2 podcast download on iTunes for two weeks.

 

2nd Place:         Popular Science “Contributing Troubadour” Jonathan Coulton Series

Each week, PopSci's "contributing troubadour" Jonathan Coulton, talks to the innovators behind the technologies featured in Popular Science  and was one of the Top 10 Science broadcasts on iTunes, and the Top 100 in all categories during its launch month.

 

3rd Place (tie):   Newsweek.com “Newsweek On Air” Series

Each week, in addition to broadcasting the entire show online, Newsweek.com provides direct links to the magazine stories that inspired the broadcast. Newsweek “On-Air” Series is currently sitting in the top 100 of news/politics podcasts on iTunes.     

       

Parents Magazine Podcast Series

The first episode of the Parent’s Magazine Podcast was the #1 download in the Kids & Family section of iTunes, and was #69 of the top 100 iTunes podcasts. It has been positively reviewed and featured on the top parenting blogs, including daddytypes.com and Maya’s Papaya.

The “Best Mobile Strategy” category recognizes the innovative and effective use of the mobile platform.

 

Winner:             Epicurious “Epi to Go”

This mobile application enables users to access a recipe database of more than 25,000 recipes via cell phone or PDA.  20,000 users have signed up since its introduction this past spring.

 

2nd Place:         SI Mobile Swimsuit

Products include videos from the making of the 2006 Swimsuit edition of Sports Illustrated, ringtones, wallpapers, eGreetings and evites, as well as instant messaging content including emoticons, avatars, winks, skins and backgrounds.

 

3rd Place:          Wine Spectator Mobile Companion

Wine Spectator's vast database of wine ratings, tasting notes, vintage charts and wallpaper is accessible directly from a cell phone or PDA.

BEST ONLINE COMMUNITY

The “Best Online Community” category recognizes the best use of forums, chat rooms, user-generated content and other interactive features that engage readers.

 

Winner:             1UP.com Clubs

1UP.com is the #1 gamer community on the web where gamers can read blogs, join clubs and exchange messages with thousands of like-minded enthusiasts.

 

2nd Place:         The Nest

The site is built and maintained by recent-weds in an official capacity (editors) and unofficial (bloggers and members) and boasts unique built-for-two budgeting tools, checklists, and strong user-generated, tried-and-true advice on all things newly wed—from home-buying tips, to easy entertaining ideas and managing the in-laws.

 

3rd Place (tie):   Backpacker’s Trail Network

The Trail Network provides Backpacker readers with cutting edge technology and user-generated content in the form of an extensive network of hikes, GPS data, 3D trail maps, aerial photography and Google Earth flyovers.

 

Epicurious Forums and Member Recipes

One of the first true community/social networking sites,every minute of the day someone is exchanging favorite recipes or seeking advice from the community or adding their own favorite family recipes into a newly created database just for them.

The “Best Web-Only Tool” category recognizes the best web-only interactive features.

This special online feature showcases the top 100 technologies of the past year and features flash animation, photo galleries and videos.

 

2nd Place (tie):  AOPA Pilot 40 Top Technologies

This interactive guide, based on the August 2006 AOPA Pilot special report “The Top Technologies Influencing General Aviation,” explores the latest in general aviation technology from GPS to enhanced vision systems.

 

                        Runner’s World Smart Coach

Smart Coach provides users with a simple, science-based interactive tool that produces personalized, customizable training plans.

 

SI.com MySI

The MySI product includes a rotating screensaver featuring full-screen team photo gallery, a sports ticker, and an SI.com-powered “recommendation engine” that aggregates the top stories from across the Web on each team.

 

                        Wired.com Interactive Bionic Tour

After interviewing amputees, body modifiers, gender hackers and scientists, Wired illustrated the findings using an interactive graphic, showcasing the latest scientific advances in bionics, as well as those about to emerge.
