The devil is in the details when it comes to projecting professionalism, according to style guru Susan Sommers March 25 presentation at New York Citys Saks Fifth Avenue. Nearly 50 attendees at MPAs recent career-enhancing event learned a wide range of tips on how to create a killer first impression, the niceties of networking and the new rules of dressing for success in todays workplace.
The seminar highlighted how a first impression can often be the final impression. Ms. Sommers demonstrated the keys to optimizing a first impression, which included projecting energy, keeping great posture, making eye contact, smiling and gesturing naturally and having a solidbut not bone-crunchinghandshake.
The most important elements of successful networking were shared as well as some lesser-known tips as well, such as Never offer your business cardalways wait for it to be requested and the proper way to introduce others. Along with advice on color and style, Ms. Sommers demonstrated on volunteers how to project whatever they felt their core qualities were (competent, sophisticated, etc.) through clothing and accessory choices.
