The TORCH Magazine Project's First Magazine,School’s Out…But Not For Long
FEATURED OUTREACH OPPORTUNITY: The TORCH Magazine Project (New York)
The TORCH Magazine Project – which provides a unique opportunity for NYC High Schoolers to explore careers in journalism – is looking for volunteers!
Project Info:Founded in 1999, TORCH (Together Our Resources Can Help) is dedicated to transforming the lives of underserved New York City public high school students by providing intensive exposure to career training and opportunities in communications and the arts, all while facilitating a meaningful way of increasing the diversity of the workforce in those industries. This year, as part of our Magazine Project, students created their very own magazine. Mentored by the Editorial Director/ Publisher and her team at Adweek, TORCH participants conceptualized, wrote, edited and designed an entire magazine.
The first issue of the magazine, titled School’s Out…But Not For Long, provided content about school, careers and teenage life. The 40-page publication was distributed to schools, after school programs, our corporate partners and hundreds of high school students at the annual Tales from the Campus TORCH College Fair held at New York University. Articles included, “The Internet Election: 2008 Presidential hopefuls fully utilize the Web”, “ACT vs. SAT: Which should you take”, “How to Adapt to a New School” and “AP Classes: Are they really worth it”?
The magazine was such a success that we are planning to have another Magazine Project for the 2008/2009 school year. We want the next project to be bigger and better than the last. Here are five ways you can help.
1.) Host a workplace visit and or tour. Throughout the duration of the Magazine Project, our students were given the opportunity to tour various publications, including Rolling Stone, and meet with industry professionals. This is a great opportunity for professionals/publications who would like to be a part of this project, but due to limited availability, are only able to help out on a one-time basis.
2.) Mentor students throughout the project. Each year, we partner with a magazine to guide the students through the process of creating a publication. For the 2007/2008 Magazine Project, students were mentored by Adweek’s own Editorial Director/ Publisher, and her dedicated staff. We are always looking for additional mentors to join the team.
3.) Host a student for Shadow Day 2009. Go one-on-one with a New York City High School student and give them the opportunity to experience a day on the job. Sign your workplace up as a host site and we’ll match one (or a few) of our superstars with yours. Last year’s Shadow Day hosts included InStyle, Adweek, Rolling Stone and The American Lawyer. (*Note: Shadow Day is held in February.)
4.) Take out an ad in the magazine. We are currently seeking advertising sponsors to help bring the 2008/2009 Magazine Project to life. This is a fantastic opportunity to reach thousands of teenagers. Join 2007/2008 advertisers – which included American Express, Universal McCann, AARP and BBDO – who helped us offset the printing costs of this project.
5.) Provide an internship to one of our students. Help our students further learn the ins and outs of the magazine business by providing an internship during the summer.
6.) Purchase a ticket to our fundraiser. The TORCH L.I.G.H.T. Awards, held every November, acknowledge excellence in Leadership, Inspiration, Guidance, Heart and Teaching. TORCH presents these awards annually to acknowledge those organizers and individuals who have helped make a difference in the lives of underserved New York City high school students and the community at large.
