In January 2003, MPA and ASME jointly established their lifetime achievement awards. The Lifetime Achievement Awards combines what was formerly the Henry Johnson Fisher Awards, which were established in 1964, and ASME's Magazine Editors' Hall of Fame Award, established in 1995. The awards dinner takes place annually within the last week of January.
History of The Henry Johnson Fisher Award
This Award, established in 1964, honors a magazine leader who has gained distinction through significant and long-standing contributions to the publishing business - one who has demonstrated extraordinary leadership, skill, and understanding in unifying the editorial, advertising, circulation and business aspects of magazine publishing into a successful enterprise and one who has made notable contributions to the magazine industry.
Henry Johnson Fisher - magazine publisher, civic leader and philanthropist - was Founder and Chairman of the Board of Popular Science Publishing Company. On his 90th birthday, an annual award was established to commemorate his name and his many achievements in magazine publishing spanning more than 65 years.
Each recipient of The Henry Johnson Fisher Award receives a crystal urn. The original Award, entitled "The Arts," is on display at the headquarters of Magazine Publishers of America in New York. The urn depicts the goddess Athena, patroness of learning and the arts. Sidney Waugh, who designed the original engravings, was the recipient of many honors for his designs on crystal. He was chief associate designer for Steuben Glass. The original glass design is by George Thompson.
Bonnier Corporation, owner of Popular Science magazine, provides an honorarium of ten thousand dollars to a designated project or charity on behalf of the recipient.

The Magazine Editors' Hall of Fame was established in 1995 to recognize career-long achievement and excellence of a select group of magazine editors. In addition to being at the pinnacle of his/her career, the recipient should also have a record of "giving back" to the magazine industry as a whole, either through industry associations or other voluntary and cooperative forms of service.
