Welcome to AMC 2008 A MESSAGE FROM THE CONFERENCE CHAIRPERSON MICHELA O'CONNOR ABRAMS, DWELL
Dear Colleague:
Please take a moment to look at your 2008 calendar and highlight Oct. 5-7. I’d like you to commit to taking a much needed trip to San Francisco.
The benefits of this fine city from which I hail are numerous – the food, the weather, the architecture, the people, the bay, the wine country, the Golden Gate Bridge, and much more. Did I mention the wine? For your purposes, however, all of these attributes provide an extremely compelling backdrop for this year’s American Magazine Conference (AMC).
This AMC is perhaps more important than any in the past. A blinding glimpse of the obvious perhaps, but don’t we need each other now more than ever? Our brands and the communities they serve are being challenged on many fronts – economically and technologically to name two. At the past four AMC’s we have discussed the power of print and the brands that were born in print and translate across platforms. We are smart enough to know what we have at stake, and in the current economy these stakes are higher than ever. I have no doubt that we are all spending more time finding ways to improve our revenue opportunities and the almighty EBITDA. And, with that usually comes the cut in discretionary spending. My point is simply that this year’s AMC cannot be considered discretionary spending and therefore a casualty of our “financial fine tuning.”
We have developed a program that is essential in every way. A program that focuses on unleashing the power of our brands across all platforms, across all borders. Business leaders from outside our industry like Jeffrey Katzenberg, Tom Rogers, futurist Paul Saffo and Facebook’s Sheryl Sandberg will bring fresh and provocative ideas to our conference. The visit to Google and meeting with some of their senior executives promises to be one of the conference highlights. During our working sessions, we’ll be all business. No B.S. No “been there, done that” sessions. And of course, no BAD WINE.
As your 2008 AMC Chairman, I invite you to email or call me with your questions and comments. I look forward to personally welcoming you to our city by the bay.
Sincerely,
Michela O’Connor AbramsPresident/Publisher DWELL
