DAY 3May 24, 2004

The 35th FIPP World Magazine Congress closed on Tuesday, May 24. The second and final day of Congressional sessions featured  keynotes and panels that addressed a number of topics, including the power of magazines in building brands, keeping up with global youth trends, the digital publishing frontier, the magazine business ten years down the line, and more.  Later, the delegates were treated to An Evening of Art and Inspiration (and Fabulous Food and Wine) at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA).


Estee Lauder Companies CEO William Lauder gave the Tuesday opening keynote on the important role magazines play in building his companys brands.



A panel that examined what makes todays global youth tick featured (from left to right) Craig Marks, Editor-in-Chief, Blender; Lisa Smosarski, Editor, Bliss; Aurora Mangubat, Group Publisher, Summit Media; moderator Catherine Stellin, VP of Marketing & Trends, Youth Intelligence; and Atoosa Rubenstein, Editor-in-Chief, Seventeen.



Luncheon keynote Jonathan Newhouse, Chairman, Cond Nast International, challenged some of the assumptions and beliefs that underlie the idea that branding is the road to international magazine success.



The Congress closed with a reception and dinner at MoMAs newly-expanded and redesigned space by famed architect Yoshio Taniguchi.  FIPP delegates enjoyed hors doeuvres from chefs from top New York restaurants: Daniel Boulud of Daniel, Floyd Cardoz of Tabla, Zarela Martinez of Zarela and Michael Tung of Shun Lee Palace.
 

DAY 2 May 23, 2005

FIPP Congressional sessions began on Monday, May 23, and were held at the Waldorf=Astoria. A premier lineup of keynote speakers and panels focused on a variety of topics, including magazine brand extentions, global journalism, cross-media partnerships, global expansion of print in Asia, and more.

 


Don Logan, Chairman of Time Warners Media Communications Group, delivered the Monday opening keynote on the power of magazine brands in a multimedia environment.

 

 


A panel on keeping it relevant in a 24/7 world perspectives on global journalism featured (from left to right) Claudio Gurmindo, Deputy Editor,Noticias; Andreas Petzold, Editor-in-Chief, Stern; Norm Pearlstine, Editor-in-Chief, Time Inc.; Mark Whitaker, Editor, Newsweek; and Alain Genestar, Editor-in-Chief, Paris Match.  The panel stressed the importance of editorial integrity in the face of strong pressure from government and advertisers. 


 

 

Renetta McCann, CEO, The Americas, Starcom MediaVest Group, related how magazines can leverage their unique position with the consumer.

 

 


DAY 1May 22, 2005


The 35th FIPP World Magazine Conference, held for the first time in New York City and hosted by MPA, kicked off with a welcome reception and dinner on Ellis Island.

More than 900 FIPP delegates from around the world enjoy a traditional all-American barbeque of ribs and chicken in the Registry Room on Ellis Island.
