Vertigo U2 Bono is without question the most articulate rock star of his generation. When asked to write the formal induction when Frank Sinatra received a special Grammy, he wrote, "Sinatra, raised in the streets of Hoboken, hits his notes like the kiss at the end of a fist." Beautiful.
Paperback Writer The Beatles I first met Paul many years ago (well before he was 64). He is the greatest pop song writer of the century.
Will the Wolf Survive Los Lobos
I had met this band and, on a whim, asked them if they would play at a Rodale party. Being the gracious gents they are, they agreed. It was a night to remember.
Amsterdam Guster
Guster is one of the smartest young bands around. The protagonist of this up-tempo diatribe threatens his ex by telling her he's going to write a book. This band also agreed to play for a recent Rodale sales meeting. If nothing else, we have seriously good off-sites.
Radio, Radio Elvis Costello
I had lunch with Elvis Costello in Dublin and brought him a copy of All the Pretty Horses by Cormac McCarthy as a gift. He took it and said, "I don't read." I then asked, How is it possible to write the way you do and not read? He took a drag on his cigarette and laughed. Two weeks later, he called me to ask for the other two McCarthy books in the trilogy.
Lola" The Kinks This is a sing-along. Please feel free. Ray Davies published a book of short stories with me when I was at Hyperion. At his request, we had drinks at The China Club on New York's Lower East Sidefor those of you who know the place, its eminently appropriate for this song.
