STEPHEN J. ADLER

Stephen Adler serves as Editor-in-Chief of BusinessWeek.  Prior to assuming this role in 2005, Mr. Adler spent several years at The Wall Street Journal, during which time he directed reporting teams that won three Pulitzer Prizes.  As the Journal’s Deputy Managing Editor, Mr. Adler helped direct news coverage of the daily paper, extended the reach of the Journal on the Internet and in other media, and oversawThe Wall Street Journal Books imprint.  Mr. Adler is also the author of The Jury: Trial and Error in the American Courtroom, as well as co-editor of Letters of the Century and Women’s Letters.

Jonathan Alter is an award-winning columnist, television analyst and author. Since 1991, Mr. Alter has written a widely-acclaimed Newsweek column that examines politics, media and social and global issues. For more than a decade, he has worked as a contributing correspondent to NBC News. His 2006 book The Defining Moment: FDR’s Hundred Days and the Triumph of Hope was a national bestseller. As an editor, he helps shape Newsweek’s overall news coverage. Mr. Alter has earned many awards, including first prize from the National Headliner Awards for a series of columns on life after 9/11. He was also part of the Newsweek teams awarded the National Magazine Award for General Excellence in 1993, 2002, 2004.

Mike Baker heads the Nokia Advertising Business for Enpocket, a Nokia company. He has been at the forefront of interactive communications in the wireless, Internet and multi-channel video markets, bringing his experience pioneering interactive advertising and analytics technologies to drive the emergence of a more personal and relevant form of advertising through mobile devices. Mr. Baker joined Enpocket in 2004 from GrandBanks Capital.  Prior to that, he was Executive Vice President at Engage Technologies, Inc. He began his career as a corporate attorney in Washington, DC representing media, telecommunications and technology companies.

JULIAN BAIM, PhD
Executive Vice President, Chief Research Officer, Mediamark Research, Inc.

 

Dr. Julian Baim is Executive Vice President, Chief Research Officer at Mediamark Research, Inc., serving as Technical Director for MRI’s syndicated national readership study and directing the Custom Research Division.  Dr. Baim received his doctorate in Political Science from the City University of New York.  After teaching at Hunter College and John Jay College, he joined Scarborough Research in 1983 as its Sampling Director and later served as their Research Director. Dr. Baim has chaired the ARF Sub-Committee on response rates and was the Co-Chair of the ARF’s Magazine Research Validity Committee. He is a member of the Market Research Council and AAPOR.

SHOSHANA BERGER

In 2001, Shoshana Berger launched ReadyMade, a magazine devoted to creation and creative reuse, with her colleague, Grace Hawthorne.  Ms. Berger now serves as the magazine’s Editor-in-Chief, leading ReadyMade in its do-it-yourself approach to home improvement.  In addition to founding and directing ReadyMade, Ms. Berger has worked for a number of other magazines including Wired, The New York Times Magazine, Spin, Salon, The San Francisco Chronicle, Business 2.0, and Travel + Leisure.

DEIRDRE BIGLEY

Vice President, Worldwide Advertising & Interactive, IBM Corporation

 

Deirdre Bigley oversees all television, print, and interactive advertising for IBM Corporation worldwide, as well as all IBM content on ibm.com.  She previously served as Vice President of Integrated Marketing Communications for IBM Global Services, IBM’s largest business unit.  Prior to joining the company in 1996, Ms. Bigley spent 10 years in Agencies in New York, Dallas and Boston.  Additionally, she serves as a member of the Executive Board of the Ad Council, the Board of the Business Marketing Association and the Advertising Women of New York (AWNY).

 

DEBRA BIRNBAUM

Executive Editor, Cross-Platform Content Integration, Gemstar-TV Guide

 

Debra Birnbaum assumed the newly-created role of Gemstar-TV Guide’s Executive Editor, Cross-Platform Content Integration in 2007.  She works on enhancing and maximizing the creation and integration of content across the company’s various media platforms and assists the sales department in packaging these franchises. Ms. Birnbaum was previously a consultant with TV Guide, overseeing special projects including the implementation of TV Guide’s new breaking news initiative and the introduction and expansion of some of the company’s key cross-platform content franchises. Prior to joining TV Guide she served as Editor-in-Chief of Life & Style, Executive Editor of Inside TV, and has served as Features Editor for the New York Post.

JONAH BLOOM

Editor, Advertising Age

 

Jonah Bloom oversees editorial operations for Advertising Age across all platforms, including its print and online editions. Mr. Bloom joined Ad Age in 2002 from PRWeek, which he helped launch in 1998 as News Editor, and where he later became Editor-in-Chief. He has had considerable experience reporting on the media industry in Europe, having founded and serving as Editor of Campaign Media Business in the U.K. Mr. Bloom’s other roles have included Magazines Editor at Press Gazette, a news reporter on VNU’s Accountancy Age and reporter at PrintWeek. In 2002 Mr. Bloom edited the HarperCollins book Top Companies in Marketing & Media.

JONAS BONNIER

Chairman, Bonnier Corporation


Jonas Bonnier this year became head of Bonnier Corporation, the new U.S. media company formed when Bonnier Group combined with its U.S. magazine partner World Publications, and with the purchase of Time Inc.’s Parenting Group and Time4 Media titles.  Mr. Bonnier was previously both President/Chairman of Bonnier’s Magazine Group and Executive Vice President of Bonnier AB, working on magazines as well as newspapers, film, television books and Internet media. He launched the Internet company Bonnier Online in 1995, and before that, Mr. Bonnier was employed in his family business’ book operations and worked as a writer, writing novels, film and TV scripts and newspapers.

Chief Executive Officer, Scanbuy

 

Jonathan Bulkeley is Chief Executive Officer of Scanbuy, the global leader in visual navigation for the wireless industry. He served on the Board of Directors of Scanbuy for two years before becoming CEO in 2006. In the past 12 months, Scanbuy announced several global partnerships including Telefonica Moviles, Nokia and DuPont. Previously, Mr. Bulkeley was the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Lifeminders, Chief Executive Officer of Barnes & Noble.com, Non-Executive Chairman of QXL, Managing Director and Founder of AOL UK, Vice President of Business Development for AOL, and held various sales and marketing positions at Time Warner Inc. In 2000 the World Economic Forum named him one of the “Top 100 Technology Pioneers of the Year.”

As Editor-in-Chief Angela Burt-Murray oversees the editorial content of Essence, the definitive voice of today’s dynamic African-American woman, with an audience of 7.7 million readers and a monthly circulation of nearly 1.1 million.  Ms. Burt-Murray most recently served as Executive Editor of Teen People, where she helped execute the magazine’s editorial mission, managed the staff, top-edited its entertainment and real life departments and managed the budget. Prior to Teen People, where she also served as Beauty Director at a different time, she was Executive Editor at Honey, and Fashion and Beauty Features Editor for Essence. Ms. Burt-Murray is the co-author of The Angry Black Woman’s Guide to Life and The Vow, a novel.

GAYLE BUTLER

Gayle Butler is Editor-in-Chief of Better Homes and Gardens. Before assuming this position in 2006, Ms. Butler served as Editorial Director for Better Homes and Gardens Special Interest Publications and Creative Collection.  Ms. Butler joined Meredith Corporation in 1983 and soon moved to the staff of Better Homes and Gardens monthly magazine as Associate Editor, later serving as the Senior Home Editor for Better Homes and Gardens Books.  After leaving Meredith for a freelance career, she rejoined the company in 1994 as Editor of the Special Interest Publication Remodeling Ideas.

DAVID CARR

Columnist, The New York Times

 

David Carr serves as The New York Times media issues columnist for the Business section, and as general assignment reporter for the Culture section.  He also produces a daily blog, “The Carpetbagger,” during the Oscar awards season.  When Mr. Carr joined the Times in 2002, he covered the magazine publishing industry for the Business section.  Prior to working for the Times, Mr. Carr was a contributing writer for both The Atlantic Monthly and New York Magazine, and was a media writer for Inside.com. He is currently working on a book for Simon & Schuster about the nature of memory.

Michael Clinton has been Chief Marketing Officer and Publishing Director of Hearst Magazines since 2001.  He oversees publishing for 15 Hearst titles, including CosmoGIRL!, Esquire, Harper's BAZAAR and Popular Mechanics. He also directs all corporate marketing, sales, brand development, custom publishing and books. Prior to Hearst, Mr. Clinton was Executive Vice President of Condé Nast Publications, where he headed sales and marketing for the company's 15 national titles. Clinton revamped the company's multi-title sales and marketing organization, which accounted for 50 percent of its total revenue. He currently serves as the Co-Chairman of the MPA’s Magazine Marketing Coalition.

BETH COMSTOCK

As President of NBC Universal Integrated Media, Beth Comstock oversees television ad sales and leads the Digital Media, research, and marketing teams.  In this role, she guides the company’s digital strategy, business, content and distribution efforts.  Prior to this position, Ms. Comstock served as General Electric’s chief marketing officer, leading integrated communications and cross-business growth programs, such as the ecomagination environmental effort and the Imagination Breakthrough innovation initiative.  Ms. Comstock also served as Senior Vice President of Communications at NBC, and as Vice President of NBC News Communications.

John DeLucie is both Chef and Partner of the Waverly Inn, a hot new restaurant and celebrity haunt in New York City.  For the Waverly Inn’s menu, Mr. DeLucie mixes classic American food with European influences, creating his own category of high-end artisan American cooking.  Among other critical praise and recognition, the restaurant has been nominated for Time Out New York’s 2007 Eat Out Award for Best New Restaurant.  Prior to joining the Waverly Inn, Mr. DeLucie worked for three-star restaurants Arizona 206, Luxe and Oceana.

Deidre Depke was named Assistant Managing Editor at Newsweek in 2006 and continues to oversee and manage the editorial operation of Newsweek.com and its staff of editors and producers. Under her leadership, Newsweek.com received numerous honors including Editor & Publisher’s “EPpy” award for best newsmagazine website, MIN’s “Best of the Web Award” for Best National Magazine-Affiliated Web Site, and National Magazine Award nominations for General Excellence Online and Best Interactive Feature. She came to Newsweek.com as Senior Editor, and helped relaunch Newsweek.com as part of an alliance between The Washington Post Company, Newsweek, NBC and MSNBC. Before Newsweek, Ms. Depke served as BusinessWeek’s Senior Editor for news.

Rocco DiSpirito, named in 2000 as “America’s Most Exciting Young Chef” by Gourmet and “Best New Chef” in 1999 by Food & Wine, is the author of three cookbooks. The newest, Meredith Books’ Rocco’s Real Life Recipes, will release Fall 2007.  His first book Flavor won a James Beard Award, and he had penned Rocco’s Italian American with his mother. He was also the star of the hit NBC series “The Restaurant.” Mr. DiSpirito attended the Culinary Institute of America when he was 16, and worked at New York restaurants including Lespinasse and Dava before opening Union Pacific in 1997.

AMY DIXON

Amy Dixon is the Group Fitness Manager for Equinox in Santa Monica and the Fitness Columnist for Women’s Health.  She is the star and choreographer of two Women’s Health DVDs released September 2007: Total Workout in Ten! and Ultimate Fat Burn!  Ms. Dixon holds a Bachelor of Science degree in exercise physiology and many certifications. A former world competitive power tumbler and coach, she delivers a fun, performance-based class and works hard to educate and motivate her students to achieve extraordinary results.

As head of research for MPA, Wayne Eadie is responsible for initiating and implementing new research programs and methodologies for measuring the impact of magazines in the multimedia mix.  He spearheads new advertising accountability and effectiveness studies and oversees all marketing research activities for the organization. Before joining MPA in 2001, Mr. Eadie was Vice President of Global Advertising Research for Reader’s Digest. Prior to that, he spent 15 years at Newsweek, most recently as Director of Research and Development.  He began his career at Grey Advertising and later held research management positions at BusinessWeek and Family Weekly.

Mark Edmiston joined AdMedia Partners in 1999. In 1992 he helped found media investment banking boutique The Jordan, Edmiston Group Inc., which still bears his name. Before JEGI, he was Executive Vice President of Times Mirror Magazines and Group Publisher of six consumer and trade titles. Prior to that he led a management buyout of TVSM, Inc., the leading publisher of cable television guides; helped found Hippocrates (now Health) and Civilization, and served as a director of America Online. Mr. Edmiston was also President and CEO of Newsweek Inc., where he established the first foreign edition Newsweek Japan and led the company to increased profits.  He began his career at Time Inc. and held various consumer marketing positions at LIFE, The Saturday Review and CRM Inc.

Sid Evans recently appointed Editor-in-Chief of Garden & Gun. Before that, he was Editor-in-Chief of Field & Stream since 2002. Under his tenure Field & Stream continues to set the standard for excellence in the outdoor category, having been nominated for seven National Magazine Awards in the past two years. He added the title of Editorial Director of Salt Water Sportsman in 2004, and helped guide that title to its first National Magazine Award nomination for General Excellence, last year. Brian Farnham is the Editor-in-Chief of Time Out New York. Prior to joining Time Out New York in 2006, he served as Deputy Editor of Details.  He spent five years at that magazine, previously serving as Senior Associate Editor and Senior Editor before his promotion to Deputy Editor.  Mr. Farnham has written and worked for a number of publications, including The New York Times Magazine, New York and Sidewalk.com. He also authored a book about the startup of a Web 1.0 company called iWon.com.

RICHARD GLOSSER

As Executive Director of Emerging Media, Richard Glosser is responsible for developing CondéNet's video, mobile, podcast and other new media initiatives.  Prior to joining CondéNet in 2005, Mr. Glosser filled senior leadership roles at CSTV, Bolt and NBC. He spent over 11 years at Sony Pictures Entertainment, where he was Founder and President of SPE's digital media division, Columbia TriStar Interactive.  During his tenure at Sony, Mr. Glosser launched Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune online and was part of the launch team of SPE's basic cable network, Game Show Network.

John Q. Griffin is responsible for the English-language editions of National Geographic, National Geographic Adventure, National Geographic Traveler and National Geographic Kids.  Prior to joining the Society in 2001, Mr. Griffin was Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Hearst Magazines International; President of the magazine division at Rodale Inc.; and Chairman, President, and Publisher of PC World. Before that, Mr. Griffin was an editor at both book and magazine publishing companies.  He is also on the Board of Directors of Audit Bureau of Circulations, Guidepost, and of Trout Unlimited.

Philippe Guelton has served as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer since 2003.  He oversees web and print revenues and is responsible for all digital operations. HFM U.S. reaches 50 million consumers with its enthusiast brands, such as Elle, Woman’s Day, Car and Driver and Metropolitan Home. The company has been aggressive in growing its digital presence, including the launch of decoration/remodeling site PointClickHome and the acquisition of automotive online ad network Jumpstart Automotive Media. Previously, Mr. Guelton served as President and CEO of Hachette in Northern Asia where he lead the acquisition and turnaround of Japanese publisher Fujingaho.

Mark Halperin was named Editor-at-Large and Senior Political Analyst for TIME in 2007. Mr. Halperin had worked at ABC News for nearly 20 years, covering five presidential elections and serving as Political Director from 1997 to 2007. Additionally, Mr. Halperin founded and edited the online publication The Note on abcnews.com, which has been characterized as the most influential daily tipsheet in American politics by publications including The New Yorker, New York Times, Wall Street Journal and Vanity Fair.  He remains a political analyst for ABC News, and is the author of The Undecided Voter’s Guide to the Next President and the co-author of The Way to Win: Taking the White House in 2008.

Before joining the Wired News team, Evan Hansen led Cal Law, one of the first profitable websites, and later headed CNET News’ Internet and consumer coverage. He has won numerous awards for his coverage of media and technology, most recently qualifying as a finalist for the Gerald Loeb Award in 2006. Under his leadership, Wired News has launched a successful blog network and explored transparent reporting methods while consistently breaking major international news stories. In 2006, the site conducted a months-long reporting project into sex offenders on MySpace, which led to the arrest of a convicted pedophile just weeks before the social networking site agreed to change its sex offender policy.

WENDA HARRIS MILLARD

President, Media, Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia

 

Wenda Harris Millard joined Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia in 2007, after three years as a member of its Board of Directors. As President of Media, she oversees MSLO’s media business, which includes publishing, Internet and broadcasting. Ms. Millard was formerly Chief Sales Officer at Yahoo, and she has held executive positions at Ziff Davis Media, DoubleClick, SRDS, Family Circle and other major media companies. In addition, Ms. Millard is Vice Chairman of the Interactive Advertising Bureau and is a member of the Board of Directors of Ad Council and Advertising Education Foundation.

CHRISTIE HEFNER
Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Playboy Enterprises, Inc.

 

Christie Hefner has been Chairman and CEO of Playboy Enterprises since 1988.  Under her leadership, the company evolved into an international media and entertainment company, whose largest profit center is the distribution of Playboy-branded digital content via television, the Internet and wireless.  As a part of that transformation, in 1994 Playboy became the first national magazine online. Ms. Hefner has also leveraged the strength of the Playboy brand via licensing, and is expanding with location-based entertainment venues such as the Playboy Club Casino at the Palms in Las Vegas. Ms. Hefner was inducted into the MIN Digital Hall of Fame in 2005 and in 2005 and 2006, Forbes named Hefner to its “100 Most Powerful Women in the World” list.

M:Metrics, which Will Hodgman co-founded in 2004, already represents the industry standard for measurement of consumer consumption of mobile content and applications. Prior to M:Metrics, Mr. Hodgman was President and Chief Executive Officer of Sightward, Inc., a predictive analytics company. Before that Mr. Hodgman was Executive Vice President of NetRatings, provider of the Nielsen//NetRatings. He also served as President of Measurement of Jupiter Media Metrix after it acquired AdRelevance, a company Mr. Hodgman founded. Today, AdRelevance represents the global standard for online advertising measurement. Early in his career, Mr. Hodgman held executive positions at Interpublic Group of Companies, managing advertising for some of the world's most well-known brands.

 

REID HOFFMAN
Chairman and President, Products, LinkedIn

LinkedIn’s founding CEO for its first four years, Reid Hoffman became Chairman and President of Products for the company in February 2007.  While CEO, he advanced LinkedIn to profitability and over nine million members.  In his new role, Mr. Hoffman leads product and business strategy.  In addition, he currently serves on the Board of Directors for SixApart and Mozilla Corporation.  Prior to founding LinkedIn, Mr. Hoffman served as Executive Vice President of PayPal, where he oversaw business development, corporate development, government relations and banking/payments infrastructure.

ARIANNA HUFFINGTON

Arianna Huffington is the co-founder and Editor-in-Chief of The Huffington Post.  Launched in May 2005, The Huffington Post is a news and blog site that has quickly become one of the most widely-read, linked to and frequently-cited media brands on the Internet.  Ms. Huffington is also the author of eleven books, a frequent guest on several television programs, and co-host of “Left, Right & Center,” a popular public radio political roundtable program.  In 2006, Ms. Huffington was named to the TIME 100, the magazine’s list of the world’s 100 most influential people.

Josh Jackson is Co-Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Paste, recently named “Magazine of the Year” at both the Plug Awards and the GAMMA Awards. Mr. Jackson, who has been named one of Relevant’s 12 Revolutionaries and one of Georgia Trends’ “40 Under 40,” has served as a regular music and film critic for CNN Headline News and Atlanta radio station Dave-FM.  Prior to launching Paste, Mr. Jackson served as Communications Director for the Luke Society and as a freelance writer and photographer.  He also serves on MPA’s Independent Magazine Group advisory board.

DEBORAH JONES BARROW

Deborah Jones Barrow founded Hearst Magazines’ TheDailyGreen.com, a consumer-focused website on living earth-friendly, sustainable lifestyles.  The site launched in beta version on Earth Day 2007 and will debut this fall. She was previously the President of the Broad Reach Magazine Group at Primedia, part of the team that oversaw the sales integration of the About.com teen, city, parenting and automotive guide sites with the nascent brand sites of Seventeen, New York, Chicago, American Baby, MotorTrend and Automobile.  Ms. Barrow was as a marketing and media consultant and has worked in a variety of capacities at Meredith Corporation, at Hearst’s House Beautiful, and at Conde Nast’s Mademoiselle.

Mr. Johnson joined Hearst from IAC/InterActivecorp, where he served as Senior Director for Portal Partnerships. Prior to that, Johnson worked at America Online for seven years, where he was Executive Director for AOL’s education and reference sites. Mr. Johnson started his career at The Washington Post as Assistant Editor. In 1995, he helped launch The Post’s award-winning website, washingtonpost.com.

Dennis Kneale joined Forbes in 1998 to expand its coverage of technology, media and health.  Since then he has overseen some of the most dramatic business stories of the new decade, from the Internet boom, bust and rebuild to the backlash against the drug industry amid drug recalls and soaring costs.  He we previously at The Wall Street Journal as a senior editor, directing much of the 1997 Pulitzer Prize-winning coverage of new AIDS treatments. He started at The Journal in 1982 and covered advertising, technology and media and entertainment before becoming an editor in 1990. He was recently honored as a distinguished alumni by the University of Florida and inducted into the Hall of Fame of The Independent Florida Alligator student newspaper.

The current Chairman of MPA, Jack Kliger joined Hachette in 1999 after serving in a number of key executive positions at Advance Publications which included Vice President at Condé Nast Publications, Publisher of Glamour; and Publisher of GQ.  He also served as Executive Vice President of Parade Publications. He began his career at The Village Voice in 1973.  An active participant in philanthropic organizations, Mr. Kliger received the Anti-Defamation League’s Norman Newhouse Human Relations Communications Award in 2006 and was the 2000 recipient of the American Jewish Committee’s National Human Relations Award. In 2008, MPA will also honor him with the Henry Johnson Fisher lifetime achievement award.

Currently serving as President of American Society of Magazine Editors, Cynthia Leive has been Editor-in-Chief of Glamour since 2001. Under Ms. Leive, Glamour has received a record number of editorial awards, including a National Magazine Award in 2005 for General Excellence and another in 2007 for Personal Service. Crain’s New York Business has named Ms. Leive to its “Top 40 Under 40” list and she was one of Gotham’s most powerful women under 40 in New York. Her work has also been recognized by such organizations as Women in Communications, Girls Learn International and many others.  Prior to Glamour, Ms. Leive served as Editor-in-Chief of Self as well as Deputy Editor of Glamour, where she worked for 11 years.

She has reinvigorated the organization through highly strategic plans in key areas—government affairs, advertising and marketing, consumer marketing, and professional development. Recent initiatives undertaken by MPA under her direction include conferences and workshops designed to help publishers leverage their brands in the digital age, aggressive participation in e-business efforts to increase efficiencies and speed up magazine production, and a highly trafficked website. Previously, Ms. Link served as Group President, Publishing and Interactive for Sesame Workshop, formerly Children’s Television Workshop. Prior to that, she headed her own consulting firm, The Link Group, Inc.
