Magazine Publishers of America
On December 17th, at the request of the Obama Transition Team, MPA hosted an official Transition meeting on postal policy in the MPA Washington office. The meeting was chaired by Dr. Stephen Crawford of the Brookings Institution, who is the Transition official tasked with reviewing the performance of the United States Postal Service and identifying postal policy issues for the incoming Administration. MPA was one of only two associations asked to host a meeting for Dr. Crawford with representatives of key mailing industry organizations. During a wide-ranging and productive 90-minute discussion, MPA urged that a senior official in the incoming Administration be tasked with overseeing postal policy matters on behalf of President Obama. We reiterated to Dr. Crawford that, with 90 percent of U.S. magazine circulation accomplished via the mail, the American magazine industry needs a dependable and affordable postal system for as far into the future as anyone can reasonably foresee. With Postal Service volume and revenue in decline, and the system’s future viability uncertain, MPA argued that President Obama and his Administration must make postal policy a priority.
