“As the leading media brand serving managers in the federal government, expanding into state and local coverage is a natural step,” said Constance Sayers Witherspoon, President of Government Executive Media Group. “We are excited to bring a fresh perspective and cutting edge product offerings to the managers working to transform operations across city, county and state governments.”

Government Executive’s state and local coverage is led by recently hired Senior Editor Michael Grass, who brings to this initiative deep experience in reporting and editing in the state and local arena as well as in launching digital news sites. Among career highlights, Grass was a founding co-editor of, a popular news blog in the nation’s capital.

“As I've been talking with local government practitioners across the country, so many are innovating and serving their residents in new and exciting ways,” said Grass. “Government Executive State & Local will amplify these success stories.”

In addition to its unique editorial focus on innovation, Government Executive will differentiate its offerings in how it delivers content and engages the state and local audience. Starting with a mobile-optimized digital destination and daily newsletter, Government Executive will roll out a series of state and local products designed to meet the rapidly evolving information consumption habits of government managers. Coming later in 2014 will be a mobile app, online assessment tools and ebooks, all of which will allow state and local managers to access deep-dive, job-related content at any time and place. Also planned are live and digital events, most broadcast nationally, which will allow managers to access valuable learning points from other jurisdictions in real-time.

“Our goal is to speed up the learning curve, if you will – to facilitate the rapid sharing of best practices and new ideas among decision makers who are creating highly effective government programs, policies and institutions for the 21st century,” added Grass.

Government Executive is launching its State and Local initiative with a national campaign expected to reach over 15 million government and private sector influentials, including over 350,000 recipients of the inaugural newsletter. Already reaching a core group of state and local government readers, the brand will also leverage the extensive reach into these markets provided by sister brands National JournalThe Atlantic and CityLab.
