HIV Plus Editor in Chief Diane Anderson-Minshall Honored with Western Publishing Association Leadership Award

The Advocate’s Gaysayer named the Best Social Media Community/Trade & Consumer.

May 9, 2014 (LOS ANGELES) — Here Media Inc. (www.heremedia.com), the world’s leading gay media company, is thrilled to announce that Diane Anderson-Minshall, editor in chief of HIV Plus magazine (www.hivplusmag.com) and editor at large for The Advocate (www.advocate.com), has been awarded the WPA Leadership Award by the Western Publishing Association. In addition, The Advocate’s Gaysayer won the Best Social Media Community/Trade & Consumer prize during the 63rd annual Maggie Awards, which were held May 2, 2014, at the Sheraton Gateway Hotel in Los Angeles.

“Our Leadership Award honors an individual whose vision and innovation in the past year demonstrated real-world execution of a new platform, concept, or segment of the business that improved or altered the media landscape in which it operates, or expanded or created a new business opportunity,” said WPA President Ron Epstein, who presented Anderson-Minshall with the award. “Diane’s work in helping develop the HIV Plus Treatment Guide Mobile App, and her continued devotion to the industry, is an inspiration. She is the epitome of what this award is all about.”

Anderson-Minshall was honored for spearheading the HIV Plus Treatment Guide Mobile App, which was the first app to offer comprehensive information on medications and other treatments, a pharmacy finder, and articles from the trusted health editors of HIV Plus magazine. The new app provides medication listings, daily pill reminders, appointment reminders, viral load tracking, a pharmacy finder, and a detailed listing of current clinical trials, among other valuable features.

“To be given this award, especially knowing the other two amazing finalists, is really the highest compliment I’ve ever gotten,” says Anderson-Minshall. “What we do at HIV Plus, we do because there are millions of people relying on us not just to get them reliable medical, political, and social information but also to destigmatize their lives, highlight the accomplished people living with this chronic condition, and inspire them to live long, healthy, active lives. So to get an award for doing the right thing is just icing on the cake.”

The WPA also honored The Advocate’s Gaysayer for its leadership role in the social media space. One of the first media outlets to have created a social media network dedicated to LGBT-friendly comedy, Gaysayer has accumulated nearly 10,000 Twitter followers with hundreds of LGBT comedians contributing. Gaysayer created the StandOUT contest, where comedians submitted YouTube videos with Advocate readers voting on their favorite, and Blanche Week, during which comedians tweet-roasted their favorite LGBT celebrities. Gaysayer provided an outlet for LGBT comedians to gain attention and a platform in the world of comedy. Follow Gaysayer now at @gaysayer!
