LEAH FLICKINGER APPOINTED EDITOR-IN-CHIEF OF BICYCLING

EMMAUS, PA, and NEW YORK, NY – April 12, 2016 – Rodale Inc., the global health and wellness content company, today announced that Leah Flickinger has been named editor-in-chief of Bicycling, the world’s leading cycling magazine brand. Flickinger will provide direction for all brand editorial platforms, including print, web and social channels. She will report to Rodale Group Editorial Director Bill Strickland.

Leah was named interim editor-in-chief of Bicycling last month, having previously served as the brand’s executive editor since 2010. In that position, she helped to successfully transform Bicycling from a legacy print publication to a dynamic, visually exciting multimedia brand. Her work has been recognized with two National Magazine Award nominations, as well as inclusion in The Best American Sports Writing, a prestigious annual publication that spotlights the top sports journalism of the year.

Flickinger succeeds Strickland, who was named group editorial director in March 2017. Strickland was responsible for leading the brand as it looked to refine its voice and content to reach a broader audience that includes a growing population of urban and recreational cyclists. The magazine went on to be featured on Ad Age’s 2014 Magazine A-List.

“Leah operates with a deep passion and understanding of the cycling community that has been instrumental in our brand evolution over the past few years,” said Strickland. “Her strong instincts and editorial background will be vital as we look to reach new audiences, such as the growing demographic of female riders, across innovative platforms and experiences.”

“This is an exciting time for the industry: The population of urban and recreational cyclists is increasing and cities are responding with improved safety measures and protected bike lanes,” said Flickinger. “Cycling in general is becoming more diverse in terms of gender, race, and age. I’m thrilled to lead the Bicycling team as we reflect this growth while continuing to expand the gear and fitness content our existing readers know and love.”

Having joined Rodale almost 20 years ago, Leah first worked at Rodale Books where she rose to senior editor, acquiring and editing more than 25 non-fiction books in the areas of health, fitness, and sports. Notable titles include Get Your Own Damn Beer! I’m Watching the Game by Holly Robinson Peete, Bicycling Magazine’s Guide to Bike Touring, and Duel in the Sun: Alberto Salazar, Dick Beardsley, and America’s Greatest Marathon by John Brant. From 2007-2010 she served as deputy editor at Women’s Health, where she coauthored The Women’s Health Diet and edited Slim, Calm, Sexy Yoga by Tara Stiles.

A long-time cyclist, Flickinger is a graduate of Tufts University and lives in Pennsylvania with her husband and daughter.
