NEW YORK (May 8, 2017) — The Players’ Tribune (TPT) announced today the launch of The Rematch, a podcast hosted by 11-year NBA veteran Etan Thomas. The show explores the dynamics of how athletes are portrayed in the media, and challenges the nature of popular opinion. The eight-episode series will be available on iTunes, Spotify, Stitcher, and Google Play. To listen and subscribe, go here:

The Rematch provides an open forum for guests to reclaim their identities such controversial labels as polarizing, mercurial and immature. The show will also take on complicated subjects that include religion, sexuality, race, policing and social activism.

The series launches today with an exclusive interview with former NBA player Charles Oakley that touches on his relationship with the Knicks organization. Other guests that will be featured in the series include Keyon Dooling, Chamique Holdsclaw, John Wallace, Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf, Bill Laimbeer, Kenny Anderson and Dr. John Carlos. Episodes will be released daily over the course of the week.

“We’ve all heard the clichés — probably used them,” says Thomas. “Selfish. Troublemaker. Bad teammate. Overpaid. And worse. Labels are easy to apply - by media, by fans, by coaches and GMs - and they’re often impossible for athletes to shed. Underneath them are the currents of race and class that underlie so much of what separates us in this country. The Rematch challenges those clichés while exploring the underlying issues. The conversations will get to who the athletes really are, and shed some light on how their images became so distorted. It’s a provocative look at how fans see athletes, and who shapes their perceptions.”

“Etan’s passion for truth, authenticity and social activism is as impressive as his 11-year career in the NBA,” says Jaymee Messler, president of The Players’ Tribune. “Etan’s podcast serves as another voice in the Tribune family to give athletes a safe space to be themselves. With his creative navigation, listeners will experience a side of these misunderstood athletes that nobody else has.”
