WIRED KICKS OFF 2017 WITH FIRST-EVER FICTION ISSUE

“TALES FROM AN UNCERTAIN FUTURE” FEATURES 14 STORIES FROM

AWARD-WINNING WRITERS N.K. JEMISIN, ETGAR KERET, CHARLES YU, CHARLIE JANE ANDERS, AND OTHERS

…On National Newsstands December 22nd

Today, WIRED reveals the January Sci-Fi Issue. It is the first time that publication has devoted an entire issue to fiction. In his editor’s letter, titled “The Power of Science Fiction,” editor in chief Scott Dadich explains why fiction, and why now:

"One of this publication’s most important jobs is to see the big trends, spot important business models, and chronicle landmark innovations that show us where we’re going. But right now, that is hard to do. In this rapidly changing, aggressively agitated moment, it’s very difficult to discern what the future holds. So we decided to consider things a little more obliquely. Sometimes to get a clearer sense of reality, you have to take some time to dream.

Science fiction has a robust history of inspiring real innovation. Submarines, robots, and cell phones were all envisioned first in novels, plays, and movies. Thinking up all sorts of different futures, embracing our fears and our dreams, is part of the process of building a better tomorrow."

The January Science Fiction issue includes stories from 14 exceptional authors, including newly published work from 2016 Hugo award-winner N.K. Jemisin The Evaluators: To Trade with Aliens, You Must Adapt — as well original fiction from Charles Yu, who writes for HBO’s Westworld; the creators of The Expanse, who go by the shared pen name James S.A. Corey; Israeli author Etgar Keret, Charlie Jane Anders, Glen David Gold, and others.

The cover of the issue, by artist and illustrator Christoph Niemann, features the tag line “Tales from an Uncertain Future.” Inside the issue, each story is set against a distinct yet interrelated background pattern, designed through a modular, graphical system created by Hungarian designers Éva and Ildikó Valicsek.
