Travel + Leisure Announces Winners of Social Media in Travel + Tourism Awards

TRAVEL + LEISURE ANNOUNCES WINNERS OF SECOND ANNUAL SOCIAL MEDIA IN TRAVEL + TOURISM AWARDS (SMITTYS℠)

International Awards Honor Hotels, Cruise Lines, Airlines, Tourism Boards, and More 
for Their Cutting-edge Social Media Campaigns

Esteemed 2013 Jury Includes Ivanka Trump, Facebook’s Lee McCabe, and Jason Calacanis, Among Others

New York, NY (June 3, 2013) – Travel + Leisure® announced today the 29 winners and 9 runners-up of the second annual Travel + Leisure® Social Media in Travel  + Tourism℠ Awards (SMITTYS℠), which recognize the companies in the travel and tourism industry showcasing the most innovative uses of social media. This year’s sixteen new categories spotlighted individual campaigns and the best use of platforms, as well as the debut of the Best Use of Social Media by an Independent Journalist/Blogger, awarded to Passports with Purpose.

Two companies are winners in two categories each: Turkish Airlines wins for Best Overall Use of Social Media by a Global Airline and for Best Mobile-Friendly Campaign, and Four Seasons Hotels takes top honors for Best Facebook Chat/Twitter Chat/Tweetup/Hangout as well as for Best Overall Use of Social Media by a Hotel Chain. Four Seasons’ Toronto Hotel took home the SMITTY Award for Best Overall Use of Social Media by an Individual Hotel, Global. Also of note, Tourism Australia receives two accolades: they were named winner in the category of Best Instagram Photos and runner-up in Best Overall Use of Social Media by a CVB, Global.

The winners were selected by a distinguished panel of social media and travel industry experts, including Lee McCabe, head of travel for Facebook, and Ivanka Trump, cofounder of The Trump Hotel Collection. The jury reviewed hundreds of submissions across 28 categories and named 29 winners, including one tie, and 9 runners-up.

“We launched the SMITTYS last year simply to recognize innovation in social media, but the competition has also raised the creativity bar for travel companies,” says Rich Beattie, Executive Digital Editor of Travel + Leisure. “The increased level of originality really showed in this year’s entries—we saw new ideas on every social media platform. And the addition of travel bloggers has injected the awards with even more energy.”
