Utne Reader Names Media Awards Winners

Magazine recognizes independent outlets for high-quality coverage in nine categories

TOPEKA, Kan. (June 5, 2013) — Utne Reader today names the winners of its 23rd Utne Media Awards. Winners will appear in the July-August issue, on newsstands June 18.

The Utne Media Awards, formerly known as the Utne Independent Press Awards, recognize the distinctiveness and vitality of alternative media. Winners represent the best in independent political, social/cultural, arts, environmental, international, body/spirit, and science/technical coverage as well as best writing and general excellence.

“We chose the magazines and websites that we found ourselves continually returning to over the course of the year,” says Editor in Chief Christian Williams. “These particular publications mean a lot to us, and we’re pleased to have another opportunity to spread the word about them to our readers.”

Utne Reader’s editors begin the process by selecting nominees through extensive reading and yearlong examination, rather than via a competition with entry forms and fees. This way, the magazine honors the efforts of smaller, sometimes overlooked outlets that provide innovative, thought-provoking perspectives. All elements, from graphics to coverage, are taken into consideration when selecting the nominees and eventually the winners.
