Atlantic Media Hires Stephanie Gaskell to Join New Defense One Site

WASHINGTON, D.C. (June 17, 2013) - Kevin Baron, executive editor of Defense One, Atlantic Media's newest news media and events brand, announced today that Stephanie Gaskell will join the venture as associate editor/senior reporter.

Launching this summer, Defense One will deliver high-level news, analysis, and ideas to defense leaders and stakeholders navigating the unprecedented transformation of U.S. defense strategy and operations. More information is available at

Gaskell comes to Defense One from Politico, where she served as Pentagon reporter. She began her journalism career nearly two decades ago at The Associated Press, with postings in Miami, Brussels and New York. After covering the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center, she covered politics and government at the New York Post's City Hall bureau. In 2007, she spent six consecutive months in Iraq as a freelance reporter before joining the New York Daily News, where she also launched and edited the War Zone blog. She has also reported from Afghanistan, Haiti and Guantanamo. In 2010, she launched her own website, The War Report, before moving to Washington.

"Stephanie is a true pro, well-known across the military beat for her no-nonsense style and fair voice," said Baron. "Having covered New York City, two wars, and now Washington, D.C., from the Pentagon to Congress and industry, Stephanie was an obvious fit for Defense One, which will benefit tremendously from her respected track record of unabashed journalism and eye for the stories that matter to readers."

Defense One, through a mix of high quality digital and events offerings, will inform the national security leadership community by identifying and showcasing the ideas and trends driving the future of national security while delivering real-time news, breaking analysis, and hard-hitting journalism.

"I'm so excited to be a part of this new venture," Gaskell said. "Defense and national security is such a complex yet vital beat, and the way people get their news is constantly evolving. Defense One is going to revolutionize the defense beat. I'm very honored to be working with Kevin Baron, who is highly talented and widely respected in our field."

Gaskell is the second major hire for Defense One, which is based in the Atlantic Media offices in Washington, D.C.
