Why Time Inc., Conde Nast and other Magazine Publishers Are Charging into Brand Licensing
Max Willens reports "Meredith stands head and shoulders over the rest of the publishing world, brand-licensing observers see a lot of runway for other magazine publishers... Other publishers that are active in licensing include Playboy, with $1.5 billion; Hearst, accounting for $350 million; Rodale, $155 million; and Condé Nast, $150 million."
The Print Revival: Catalogues Making a Comeback
Brands such as Todd Snyder, Tommy Bahama and others have embraced print as a differentiated marketing tool: —Andy Comer, the new head of marketing for Tommy Bahama, spearheaded what he called “the biggest and boldest statement we’ve ever made in print” for spring, producing a 132-page catalogue that brought together all of the brand’s product categories for the first time. “We wanted to make a comprehensive statement about our brand, and doing a large-format, beautiful, widely distributed print piece integrated with the larger digital and in-store environment was perfect,” he said. The “tactility of print is a perfect complement to our brand. There’s a lot of storytelling in there and it brings our brand story to life,” Comer added.

“The MPA’s IMAG community prides itself on sharing and learning from one another,” said Andy Clurman, President and CEO of Active Interest Media and Chair of the IMAG Financial Benchmarking Study. “As a board, we thought a benchmarking study would be the ideal way to provide member companies with key metrics to better understand how their performance compares to similar companies.” The survey was conducted in the last quarter of 2016 by Mazars USA, a global accounting firm. Only open to members of the IMAG community, participants received two sets of detailed results: one for all respondents and one broken down by revenue tier.
