Facebook Is Getting Ready to Test Paid Subscriptions with Publications
Lucia Moses reports "Facebook is moving ahead on plans to let people subscribe to publications through Instant Articles. Nothing’s final, but the current thinking is that it will support publications with metered paywalls and freemium models, said a source familiar with the briefings."
How Publishers Are Capitalizing on Prime Day
Last year, the first time Hearst participated in Prime Day, it dipped a toe in the water, tasking a few staffers at its e-commerce publication, Best Products, with creating Prime Day-specific content. This year, staffers at five other titles, including Good Housekeeping and the digital-native title Delish, are producing original content for the day. That content will be syndicated across other Hearst titles via its CMS, though Hearst hasn’t yet decided which titles will share which posts.

Time Inc.’s Sports Illustrated, SI Eats, is a website subdomain dedicated to the intersection of food and sports. The first, introductory post appeared last Friday, allowing the site to work out the kinks and started filling the site with content.

Essence Festival Prepares for Return to Durban, South Africa
Essence said the festival’s Durban, South Africa, edition will take place Sept. 26-Oct. 1, featuring Bishop T.D. Jakes, a talk-show host, entrepreneur and best-selling author based in Dallas. Essence magazine’s editor in chief, Vanessa De Luca, says they’ll release the rest of the lineup later.
American Heritage Returns As Digital-Only Magazine
The nonprofit American Heritage debuted its digital version on July 4, five years after it suspended print publication. The magazine, which focuses on lively, accessible scholarship, has won numerous awards, including the National Magazine Award.

“The MPA’s IMAG community prides itself on sharing and learning from one another,” said Andy Clurman, President and CEO of Active Interest Media and Chair of the IMAG Financial Benchmarking Study. “As a board, we thought a benchmarking study would be the ideal way to provide member companies with key metrics to better understand how their performance compares to similar companies.” The survey was conducted in the last quarter of 2016 by Mazars USA, a global accounting firm. Only open to members of the IMAG community, participants received two sets of detailed results: one for all respondents and one broken down by revenue tier.
