"If Google and Facebook really wanted to help publications, they would start writing them real, substantial, shore-up-the-business-sized checks, presented as either a please-stop-yelling-about-us handout, or a “carriage fee,” which amounts to the same thing." says Peter Kafka.
Marketers Waste About One-Fourth of Their Budgets
Experimentation and long-term agreements contribute to inefficiencies: "In a survey of 1,000 marketers worldwide by Rakuten Marketing, respondents estimated they waste an average of 26% of their budgets on ineffective channels and strategies. And about half of respondents said they misspend at least 20% of their budgets.—A few pessimists—just 2.9%—believed they’re squandering more than 80% of their marketing dollars."

Todd Spangler reports "New York Media, the publisher New York Magazine, Vulture, and the Cut, has acquired comedy-news site Splitsider from the Awl Network. Terms of the deal weren’t disclosed. New York Media will merge Splitsider, which launched in 2010, into Vulture.com as part of a new comedy section expected to debut in May."
