OUTSIDE FOUNDER LAWRENCE BURKE RECEIVES OUTDOOR RETAILER’S LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
~Visionary leader sparked the active lifestyle movement, fueling businesses across multiple sports and recreation sectors~
Santa Fe, NM (June 24, 2019) — Lawrence (Larry) Burke, Chairman and Editor-in-Chief, Outside Integrated Media, LLC, was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Ninth Annual Outdoor Retailer Inspiration Awards. Outdoor Retailer announced the award on the first night of Summer Market in Denver, where Burke received the accolade alongside Greg Thomsen, Chief Outdoor Officer, Adidas Outdoor. “This year’s winners of the Outdoor Retailer Inspiration Awards are all focused on taking people into the outdoors where they learn about the natural world, about conservation, and about themselves,” said Marisa Nicholson, Outdoor Retailer Vice President and show director. “We were honored to celebrate their remarkable work, and to pay tribute to both Larry Burke and Greg Thomsen for their decades-long dedication to the industry we love.”
Burke had no intention of a publishing career, but in 1973, after five years of travel, he realized there was no magazine that covered the adventurous lifestyle that had come to define him -- so he started his own, with the first issue debuting in 1977. Outside is credited with giving the active lifestyle a voice, bringing the category of outdoor media to life. For over four decades, Outside has won countless awards and has given rise to the outdoor recreation industry, which currently generates two percent of the entire U.S. gross domestic product, making it a bigger industry than mining, oil, and gas. In a moving acceptance speech thanking his industry colleagues and the brave outdoor enthusiasts whose feats were featured in the magazine, Burke reflected on his storied career: “It's everything I could have wanted to do with my life,” he said. “If I had to start over again, I would do it exactly the same way.”
