ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY ROLLS OUT ITS FIRST ROMANTIC COMEDY (ROM-COM) ISSUE WITH 10 DAYS OF CONTENT IN PRINT AND ONLINE BETWEEN NOW AND VALENTINE’S DAY

Entertainment Weekly’s February Pop Culture Index Gets Fans’ Take on Rom-Coms
February 4, 2019 – LOS ANGELES/NEW YORK – Entertainment Weekly’s first Rom-Com issue will hit stands Friday, February 8, but content starts rolling out today and continues through Valentine’s Day at EW.com. Complementing that content are stats from Entertainment Weekly’s (EW) February Pop Culture Index, which is a fun reveal of pop culture fans’ take on Rom-Coms.
EW’s inaugural Rom-Com issue will feature unique and extensive content both in print and online, including two huge cast reunions (the first one will be revealed on the cover on Thursday, February 7); a viewing party with two beloved actors from a hit Rom-Com; Untold Stories and behind-the-scenes secrets from over 25 different romantic comedies; and, an epic Rom-Com bracket battle for fans to vote on.
EW polled pop culture fans about Rom-Coms through its monthly Pop Culture Index and found that 82% of pop culture fans like romantic comedies. Amongst women, that number rose to 87% and among millennials it was even higher with 93% saying they enjoy the genre.
Rom-Coms that rose to the top as favorites include When Harry Met Sally; The Proposal; You’ve Got Mail; and, Notting Hill.
When asked which Superhero they would find it fun to see in a romantic comedy, the top picks were:
- Deadpool – 43% of all respondents (54% of millennials)
- Thor – 38%
- Wonder Woman – 34%
- Ant-Man – 28%
- Captain America – 27%
- Spider-Man – 26%
For all their fun and love, Romantic Comedies might be causing some issues in real life relationships. When asked if Rom-Coms lead to unrealistic expectations, 4 in 10 respondents (43%) and 65% of millennials said YES.

Methodology: The Entertainment Weekly Pop Culture Index is a monthly survey to find out what fans are thinking and doing. Launched in October 2018, EW’s Pop Culture Index taps into Front Row, EW’s large proprietary panel of self-selected EW consumers age 18+. February’s survey was fielded online with 538 Front Row panelists January 29-30, 2019.
