Magazine Media and the Fight Against Racism
The magazine media industry is committed to the principles of fairness, equality and justice. We aim to fight racism and promote diversity and inclusion in our workplaces and communities through our journalism and business practices. We recognize that there is more to be done on these important issues.
Magazine media publishers and journalists have played a critical role in gathering and reporting news at important moments in our national history, most recently about the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery and other Black Americans and the protests that have followed against police brutality and racism. MPA is deeply concerned about reports that journalists have been subject to arrests, threats, and violence while covering these protests. The right of the press to report on these events and to keep the public informed is protected by the First Amendment and has long been upheld by the courts. MPA continues to strongly defend these rights when they are threatened.
We intend to continue that leadership role, shedding light and enhancing the national conversation about racism, diversity and inclusion through extensive coverage in the pages of our magazines and our digital and video properties.
Within our industry, we are examining and enhancing our efforts around diversity and inclusion, focusing on recruiting and hiring efforts, supporting employee resource groups, contributing financially to nonprofit organizations that fight injustice, providing enhanced education and training, and ensuring that our brands reflect the diversity of our consumers. Through these and other actions, we are working to do our part to make a difference on these important issues.
